Nobel Peace Prize ups pressure for climate action
It is not clear whether Al Gore would have been as influential in spreading the case for the need to take action to control Global Warming had he been elected as a President of the United States. Actually, it would be safe to assume that he would not have had the time to work on "Inconvenient Truth" neither would his message been regarded as an objective assessment . In an ironic twist, it sure was good for Environmentalism and for humanity that the Supreme Court stopped the recounting of votes in Florida. The wonderful unforseen consequence of that act by the supremes is the awawarding of the Nobel peace prize to Mr. Gore and the IPCC .
This award has in effect broadened the definition of peacekeeping operations and it is hoped that the resulting awarness that it brings to the effort to contain Global Warming will play a major role in shaping an effective global policy in a few months from now in Bali.
Not everyone is rejoicing though. As it is to be expected the dissenters, such as Vaclav Klaus, the Czech President, were skeptical of the relationship between global warming and world peace. Obviously the Nobel Committee does not agree with the skeptics . They emphasized that rising sea levels, more floods, droughts and desertification will only lead to " increased danger of violent conflicts and wars".

I believe that such an honor and award will be a step closer to world peace. As more and more nations realize that environmental problems such as global warming effects everyone, we will be that much closer to coming together and solving the problem one day (hopefully). An award such as the Nobel Peace Prize truly does have the influence to get people more aware of problems, and increasing the effort to solve them. Hopefully by recognizing the work that people have done in order to save the environment or make others more aware of the situation, more and more people will join in. So such an act can only make things better. It is one step closer to unifying the world. Therefore it still involves world peace, despite what many skeptics may think.
I feel that the movie was a step in the right direction, because it began to inform the public about environmental issues. Although, I feel much more is needed. Al did a lot for the environmental cause, but he should continue his plea for change. Perhaps he should make another movie, but this time focus more on deeper environmental issues (economy, overpopulation etc.). In the end, I am not sure if a "shallow environmentalist" should have received such a prestigious award.
I do agree that if elected he would not have had the ability to create his environmental film, although he would have put us in a better spot than our current president. Al would have kept much of the environmental regulations set into play during the 1960’s and 70’s, unlike our current office.
I do believe there is an important connection between future world peace and possibility of global warming. Poorer, less prepared nations will be the ones forced to face the larger consequences of global warming. Wars will begin between nations over simple necessities such as drinking water and territory as millions are displaced by floods or other extreme conditions.
Al Gore has only begun to lead the fight of the controversial issue, global warming, and to publicize it to the general public. He has given many wonderful, and to my opinion many unpractical, suggestions to reduce our individual carbon output. Al Gore does not follow by his own example and he has been called a “Learjet Liberal” by my fellow Conservative Sean Hannity during an episode of “Hannity’s America” on Fox News as he was shown taking his private plane across the country while he preaches to others to walk or ride bikes to work. I personally do give some credit and respect to Al Gore for stepping up to this extremely debatable and touchy issue. However at this point I believe it is now time to step out and take real action if this is a real issue.
