Another Gloomy Environmental Assessment
You are encouraged to take a look at a relatively exaustive analysis of the Global Environmental Outlook by visiting the site of UNEP and then clicking on GEO 4.
GEO 4, presented by UNEP presents the real facts. Although offering some praise for beginning the trend towards a more environmentally sound world view, they also reveal unwanted truths. GEO 4 makes one realize how many environmental issues are going un-noticed or simply swept under the rug. This makes me crazy. We are making strides towards a better tomorrow; including green week on NBC, recycling pushes and cleaner fuel alternatives. But, this switch is not occurring fast enough…and perhaps it is happening a little too late. If only man(and women)kind had the foresight to see what their waste and pollution, mistreatment and overconsumption would do to their world. If only we could have treated everyone as equals from the start, and learned from our mistakes. Perhaps then we would be able to live without worrying if our drinking water was safe, if we should let our children play outside or if we should have to worry about our environments future at all?
I agree with Leah. I think that it is at least good that we have a detailed system in use to measure environmental changes and the impact it has on society, but more has to be done to make sure that ethical guidelines towards our treatment of the environment are established, and that we adopt policies to implement change. Now that the GEO 4 environmental assessment has outlined the current problems facing our environment, we should follow some of the suggestions to ensure a cleaner and sustainable world for future generations.
GEO 4 makes a lot of sense when talking about international efforts. The effects that the human race has had on the environment are too much of an impact for any one nation to fix. We truly need international environmental governance to guide the various nations of the world to work together under common goals to solve environmental problems. We face problems such as climate change, destruction of biodiversity, and water depletion, which must be solved, along with all the other problems in order to save our environment. GEO 4 gives detailed explanations as to what environmental problems are arising, and what efforts need to be made in order to solve these problems. One of the most important concepts that I read in the report was the fact that everything is connected in one way or another. What we do with one thing affects another. This has been harmful in the past, but it also works the other way. Some good things can affect other things in good ways, starting a chain reaction. It is this type of reaction that can lead to a paradigm shift and an environmental sustainable lifestyle. So with the GEO 4 report I believe we are stating the problems and are aware of our situation. It is just a matter of acting now.
