Listening to Johan Rockstrom speak was one of the more uplifting and positive pieces we had to review this semester. He started off introducing the concept of "The Quadruple Squeeze" on the earth. I though this was an intelligent way to break down the issues of human impact on the earth. Also, when he broke down the Boundaries for Safe Operating space, that was the first time I saw a way that humans can make a true, positive impact on our planet. While reviewing for our upcoming mid term, we were reading material on the issue of population. The titles of these articles alone were enough to discourage readers ("Tragedy of the Commons", "No Room at the Inn") Though they were very informative on the population issue, they left me feeling doubtful that the earth can recover. Who knows what will happen in the future, whether or no these 200+ countries can band together to simultaneously transform the earth's condition. But Rockstrom's illustration of identifying the planetary boundries and working to operate within them can provide sustainable life, left me feeling optimistic about our current state.

I really enjoyed the opening to Rockstrom's presentation, and how he started off with the positive outlook on the environmental issues we are facing. It really caught my attention when he said that we have the advantage of being the first generation to be educated about the status of the planet. When he began discussing the nine planetary boundaries, the material we had discussed in class last week became really clear. The diagrams he used to describe these boundaries proved to be really helpful.

I found the presentation of the nine planetary boundaries by John Rockstrom to be very informative. It awesome that we are the first generation to see these issues and also and realize that we are making poor decisions towards planet earth through science. The way he started out and the use of the globe made it very clear what our planet is feeling like. He also demonstrated how our system is being threatened to a catastrophic change. We must pay attention to the root or the main thresholds for change. The man large scale thresholds are the nine planetary boundaries. We must use the nine planetary boundaries as an outline and guide too change our climate change and begin to make positive sustainable development. Reducing chemicals and improving ecological habitats and biodiversity will help with a paradigm shift. I feel that this is what our government should use to form new laws for improving our environmental changes with consistency with being able to sustain dramatic changes and being able to be flexible with new changes.

I think Johan Rockstrom did a great job explaining what we have done to the environment and why we need change. I like that he made a point in saying that all 200+ countries need to work together if we want to see change in the future. He made it sound like we have the knowledge and the resources for this change to happen, and all that is left to do is change the mindset of growth that we have know. I feel that many people think growth is the only way to go, but if everyone were to listen to people such as Johan then maybe this change could be possible. Also. he made a much more convincing argument in my opinion for the use of innovation and development then Sagoff or Commoner.

I did find Rockstrom's presentation interesting. I felt he did a good job of using charts and graphs and metaphors to explain his point, but I have seen many presentations like this one, and it is getting tiring. It is certainly important that people understand environmental problems and how humans contribute to them, so I see why Rockstrom and others like Al Gore discuss this, but what I would really enjoy now is a presentation about ways to fix climate change or loss of biodiversity. This particular video was from 2010, so we do definitely have more ideas now than we did three years ago, but I still would really like to watch something about solutions. Seeing only evidence that we have messed up in the past is valid for making a better future, but only learning about that gets disheartening and depressing after a while. Rockstorm talked of how we cannot keep using water like we do now but he did not offer any suggestions on how to use less. He did not even fully explain his diagram on irrigation that is being used in African agriculture.

This presentation by John Rockstrom made me understand the diagram we previous reviewed in class. I had no previous knowledge on the nine planetary boundaries, so when we discussed this i was little confused. Learning more about the boundaries and seeing how our huge impact on them kind of scared me a little bit. However, Rockstrom's discussion gave me an uplifting feeling on the outlook of our future. Hopefully, we can make this world a better place for all of us!

This TEDtalk by Johan Rockstrom was very interesting and informative! His use of visuals and diagrams in the presentation made it his discussion clear and aided to our class discussion on this topic as well. I feel that pin-pointing the 'nine planetary boundaries' is a useful way to take on the issues of our planet. Through his talk, I found that these boundaries can be seen as guidelines in education, research, and ultimately, a more sustainable world. Once the nine boundaries are educated and accepted on a larger scale, we can begin to open the dialogue to real and active solutions. TEDtalks like this are always great, in my opinion, and can be used as stepping stones toward world-wide activism and policy change.

Out of the nine boundaries that Rockstrom discussed, I was shocked to hear that biodiversity loss has been the most impacted. That alone says how much of our planet we use and destroy. Ever since technology and innovations came into humanity's history, our economic development has exploded and now its putting major stress on all parts of the planet. Everything we take part in contributes to what Rockstrom explained as the nine boundaries. For example, we are over fishing and overhunting our land and oceans; not only because we need food but for recreation and over exploitation as well. We are using our cars more because we have more stuff to worry about in our lives and at work. We are also producing more as the economy continues to grow, therefore we are continuously polluting our planet. These are just two examples of how we are seriously over stepping our boundaries here on earth. We don't own the planet and therefore we must use it with regards to mother nature and if we don't, we will destroy ourselves. Being the most intelligent species, we should begin to work together to prevent ourselves from stepping over these boundaries. Our focus is to grow (in a finite world might I add), yet our focus should be to simply survive. We are all one of the same, yet all 200 countries fight with each other about whos is whos. We should be working together like any other species would and not against each other. With the destruction we are sitting ourselves up for, we will not be able to survive and Rockstrom was able to show just how close we are to stepping off the cliff into an irreversible destruction.

Johan Rockstrom is known for his theory of the nine planetary boundaries. Rockstrom explains that as long as we act within these nine boundaries, our society will be within the “safe zone” and able to function sustainably. Unfortunately, three of these boundaries have already been crossed, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and interference with biogeochemical processes. I do believe that our planet has limits, but I do not think that there are this many tipping points. I believe that some things are irreversible, such as when certain species go instinct. Even though cloning could technically bring some of these species back, cloning is still not a good substitute for natural reproduction. However, regarding many other subjects, I believe that there is always hope and many things can be reversed.

I found Johan Rockstrom video very interesting. It’s great to finally hear that we are making some kind of progress. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. ;) Ultimately, some have not admitted honestly the amount of damage that has been done. Our planet is strained in so many of its boundaries. Population growth is the #1 cause -no shock there. One of my favorite parts of the video is when he talks about paradigms, figuring out the thresholds to be able to expect non-linear change. I think this would help better understand problems and help with ways to solving the problem before any more damage is done.

I think Rockstrom had a very interesting way of explaining 9 nine boundaries and how they are all interrelated, and how changing one could undermine the other. I agree with his idea that the greatest solution is to change the mindset to one of sustainable development, through persistence, transformability and adaptability. I believe that if we want to start becoming a more environmentally friendly planet, the people need to see it themselves, and it will only work if their mindset is changed from the ideas that they currently hold. I believe that what I got from his talk was that we are trying to basically shift into a new paradigm and be able to survive the unavoidable change. I thought it was very interesting how he spoke of crisis leading into opportunity, and he gave the examples of agriculture in Latin America, The Great Barrier Reef and Wetlands in Sweden. Since he has proved that it is possible to turn a crisis around and get the best out of it, why are we not trying to do more of that in more parts of the world?

The presentation was really interesting and very efficient in showing all the ways the planet been affected by human activity. At the beginning of the presentation, he talks about the fact that we are the first generation that is aware that our current actions will irreversibly impact the planet's future.
I sincerely think that it is our generation greatest challenge to start using the planet resources in a sustainable way, thanks to education and better information, people now know that the planet resources are not unlimited and the capitalist way of wasting resources is unsustainable.
The concept of planetary boundaries prefectly illustrate this, climate change, ozone depletion, ocean acidification, biodiversity loss ect are all caused by human activity.

Great post but I was wondering if you could write a litte more on this
subject? I'd be very thankful if you could elaborate a little bit further. Many thanks!

Hi would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with?

I’m
planning to start my own blog in the near

We’ve hosted Thanksgiving in our Brooklyn apartment a few times and always relied on Fresh Direct, which is FANTASTIC! This year we are hosting in our new home upstate and will be making everything ourselves from scratch, which will be nerve-wracking but fun! And I agree with Sifton about the (heavy) appetizers. I want guests showing up to the table hungry!
